Mothers…
Goethe began writing his masterpiece, *Faust*, when he was 18 years old (around 1768–1769).
He worked on the piece for nearly his entire life; he completed the first part at the age of 58 (1808) and the second and final part at the age of 83, shortly before his death (1832).
Much could be said about *Faust*.
However, let us content ourselves with a single sentence of his regarding mothers:
“O Mothers, who reign in infinity, who have lived in solitude since time immemorial—yet remain ever gentle—I exalt your name. Around your heads hover the moving yet lifeless forms of life. All that once existed in splendor and pageantry is in motion there, for they yearn for eternity. As you are the forces that govern all things, you distribute them between the tent of day and the vault of night. Some are drawn by life’s sweet allure, while others are sought out and found by a daring magician; and this magician, as if bestowing precious gifts, allows all to gaze with confidence upon the wonders they long to see.” (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, *Faust*, 80)
Motherhood is the highest station bestowed upon a mortal in this imperfect and fleeting world, into which we were sent from Paradise for the sake of a trial.
For the key to Paradise has been placed beneath the feet of mothers.
The key to Paradise entails responsibilities that extend beyond just the mother’s relationship with her children; it encompasses how she treats her spouse, her children, and even herself.
1. To truly hold the key to Paradise beneath her feet, a mother must genuinely embody motherhood; she must view it as the greatest career and most vital mission of her life, dedicating her efforts accordingly.
2. To attain the key to Paradise found beneath the mother's feet, spouses—or fathers—must provide all the necessary psychological, sociological, financial, and logistical means that enable their wives to truly fulfill the role of a mother.
The two periods of a human life when one is most vulnerable are ages 0–8 and the years beyond age 80.
The treatment a person receives after the age of 80 is shaped by the investments they made in those aged 0–8 during their own past.
Observe how Allah the Almighty explains this definitive and interconnected truth to us:
“Lower the wing of humility and mercy over them, and pray for them, saying: ‘My Lord! Just as they raised and nurtured me with compassion and love when I was young, bestow Your mercy upon them as well!’” (Al-Isra, 17/24).
Depriving a child—during the critical 0–8 age range—of the love, mercy, compassion, and affection they so desperately need is not only the most ruthless form of cruelty, but it also sows the initial seeds of a vicious cycle that those who commit such acts will inevitably experience in their own old age.
Parents play a vital role in a child's life between the ages of 0 and 8.
Any void left by the absence of a mother or father during this period will lead to "oral fixation" syndrome.
“Fathers, embrace your sons; otherwise, another man will embrace them.” (Joseph Nicolosi, Ph.D. (1947–2017), Founder of Reparative Therapy; *The Psychotherapy War*, Christopher Doyle, 321)
The scholar Winnicott also stated, in the context of the consequences of "oral fixation" caused by maternal or paternal deprivation, that "a child who steals is searching for their mother."
A child affected by this syndrome is compelled to live with that burden for a lifetime.
If you purchase outside services for your child during their early years instead of providing care yourself, they, too, will resort to purchasing outside services when you grow old.
For they learned this very approach and method from you.
3. To reach the key to Paradise lying beneath their mothers' feet, children must not forget to "circumambulate" the Kaaba of their mother's heart; they must cast away—much like the ritual of stoning the devil—anything that might cause her distress.
When a Companion asked, "To whom should I show kindness, O Messenger of Allah?" the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) replied three times: "To your mother, to your mother, to your mother, and then to your father."
Thus, the path to the key of Paradise depends on what you give to your mother and what you receive in return.
Whatever you give to mothers, you will receive at least three times as much back.
If you offer light, you receive threefold light; if you offer fire, you receive threefold fire.
On humanity's journey toward happiness and success, the matter demanding the utmost attention is the value and importance we place on our relationships with our spouses (mothers)—who are our intrinsic counterparts—just as much as on our relationship with Allah, the Source of our existence.
